The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs: A Story About Greed

👧 Ages 5-8 ⏱ 1:20 📅 February 1, 2025
💡 The lesson: Being greedy can cost you what you already have

A husband and wife in a small village own a very special goose. Every day it lays one golden egg. They sell the eggs at the market, and little by little they become comfortable and happy.

Then the wife starts thinking. If the goose lays one golden egg a day, maybe there are lots more inside it. Why wait? Her husband likes the idea of getting rich overnight, so they decide to cut the goose open. There are no golden eggs inside. It's just an ordinary goose. Now they've lost the goose and the egg it gave them every day, and nothing can bring it back.

What kids can learn

This is the well-known fable of the goose that laid the golden eggs. The lesson is about patience and greed: the couple already had something good, and wanting everything right now made them lose it all.

For younger kids you can keep it simple: wait for good things instead of grabbing for more. The couple does kill the goose in the story, so if your child is sensitive about animals getting hurt, you may want to watch it first.

Talk about it: What did the couple have before they got greedy? What could they have done differently?
